Your computer is making funky sounds:
Not good! Although
there might be a couple of instances where a simple fix will do, odds are you
are going to have to purchase some new hardware.
But we first have to figure out what the
problem is. To do this you need to get
access to the computer components themselves.
So after powering down and disconnecting the power from the computer you
can remove the outer portion of the case.
If working on carpet
be sure to discharge any electrical energy that may be stored within you by
touching something metal (or use a anti-static wrist band). A charge of
electricity stored on ones body after walking across a carpet floor is great
enough to fry components or the motherboard itself.
Not a huge problem when you first open up the
case as the case is usually metal so you can’t get at the inner workings of the
computer without touching at least some metal.
Mainly worry about this when the case has already been removed.
Once you have the case off, proceed by looking for any loose
cables that might be rubbing against fans.
You might have to plug the computer in and turn it on (
while the case is off) to figure out
exactly where the noise is coming. This
will allow you to view the internals of the machine while it is operating and
making the funky sounds. If you cannot
pinpoint where the sound is coming from then you should at least try to figure
whether the noise is coming from the back of the machine (potentially the power
supply) or from the front (potentially the hard disk).
